What are hobbies and why are they important?

Before we explore the most popular hobbies, let's start with a simple question: What are hobbies? Hobbies are activities that people engage in for pleasure or relaxation during their free time. They can range from creative outlets like painting or writing to physical activities like sports or fitness routines. Hobbies offer benefits beyond just fun—they can help kids develop skills, reduce stress, and even improve their social lives.

For kids in particular, having a hobby is essential for building a sense of identity and exploring their interests outside of schoolwork. In 2024, the popularity of certain hobbies has evolved, with technology and new trends playing a significant role.

The most popular hobbies among kids in 2024

We recently asked teens in the Modak community about their favorite hobbies and what motivates them to stick with them. The responses were diverse, from traditional activities like sports and arts to unique hobbies that inspire mindfulness and creativity. Here’s a list of hobbies and interests that are trending among kids and teens in the US in 2024.

Popular quiet and mindful hobbies

These hobbies allow kids and teens to unwind, reflect, and enjoy moments of calm. While technology often takes center stage, these simpler activities continue to provide teens with a sense of relaxation and peace.

1. Word searches: A classic favorite for quiet focus

Despite the rise of video games and social media, many kids still find joy in simpler, more reflective activities. One of the most popular hobbies among kids in the Modak community is doing word searches. Not only does this activity help with focus and concentration, but it also offers a way to unwind after a busy day.

One teen shared, “My favorite hobby is word searches because it helps me stay stimulated. I started doing them with my grandma, and now I do them on rainy days when I can’t go outside and play basketball. It keeps me busy for hours and hours!” For this teen, word searches serve as both a way to connect with family and a method of relaxation.

2. Soaking corks: A unique mindful hobby

A hobby that has gained some traction among teens is soaking corks. It started as a quirky pastime of collecting corks from wine bottles, but one teen in the Modak community turned it into a calming activity. The process of watching corks soften and expand in water became a meditative experience, helping them disconnect from the fast-paced nature of daily life.

"Soaking corks is oddly satisfying," they said. "It's a small, personal hobby that brings me peace. It’s a simple, quiet activity that allows me to relax and get away from everything." This hobby emphasizes the importance of mindfulness, showing that even the most unlikely activities can be deeply rewarding.

Popular sports and physical activities

Sports and physical activities remain a staple for many kids, offering not only fitness benefits but also opportunities to form friendships and develop valuable skills.

3. Gymnastics: A physical hobby that builds confidence

Gymnastics has long been one of the most popular sports among teens, offering a blend of strength, agility, and coordination. But for one Modak teen, gymnastics became more than just a sport—it led to lasting friendships and personal growth. They began gymnastics at the age of 10, and through their practice, they met a friend who later became their best friend. Together, they joined the gymnastics team and even competed together.

"The person who inspired me to do gymnastics is Simone Biles. She’s incredible, and I even got to see her compete at the Olympics," they said. Gymnastics, for this teen, became a source of inspiration, friendship, and perseverance.

Another Modak teen shared how gymnastics fills them with an overwhelming sense of joy and confidence. "I do gymnastics, and gymnastics makes me happy, joyful, energetic, smart, confident, cool, talented, peaceful, powerful, intelligent, and everything else that’s good". Despite not having competed in a meet yet, the relationships they've built within the gymnastics community have been invaluable. "The people I met at gymnastics are so kind and helpful, and they’re really good at gymnastics. I love my coaches too!"

Lastly, another Modak gymnast shared how they transitioned from dance to gymnastics, a decision that hasn’t been easy but was incredibly rewarding. "I did dance, but I quit for gymnastics. Is it worth it? I don’t know, but I really love it. And I respect my coaches for putting in the effort to help me grow."

For these teens, gymnastics is more than just flips and routines—it's about personal growth, learning discipline, and becoming part of a community that supports and celebrates each other’s success.

Another Modak teen shared their journey: "The first horse I ever rode was named Rio. I loved riding him, but he got navicular, so I started riding Barley instead. He bucked me a few times, but I kept going."

Eventually, this teen bought their own horse, Didi, and later trained a horse that hadn’t been ridden in 20 years. "The first time he was ridden, I got bucked off, but we trained him eventually," they said. Despite not winning top awards at horse shows, their passion for horseback riding grew stronger.

For kids who live in rural areas or have access to stables, horseback riding is a perfect hobby that will connect them with nature and animals.

7. Lacrosse: Fast-paced and fun

Lacrosse has been gaining popularity in recent years, offering a fast-paced, action-packed sport that combines elements of soccer, hockey, and basketball. For this teen, lacrosse isn’t just about the game—it’s about the joy and adrenaline of being on the field. "My heart is just filled with joy when I enter the field," they said. After playing in the 10u league last year, they are now moving up to 12u, excited for the new challenges ahead. "The rules are different, with more players on the field, but I already know the basics," they added.

This sport has become a favorite among kids who are looking for something both challenging and exhilarating.

8. Soccer

Soccer remains the most popular sport in the world, and it’s no different in the US. With its worldwide appeal, soccer gives kids the chance to connect with peers globally while honing their athletic skills.

One Modak teen shared, "I really like playing soccer as a hobby because of the techniques and ways to play, or how you can invent tricks." They even took their passion for the sport to the next level by creating their own mini soccer field in their backyard. "In my backyard, I made my own goal with 2 leftover sticks and made a little court so I can play after school and with my dad." This hands-on approach highlights the teen's creativity and love for the game.

The teen also emphasized how soccer helps improve both their physical health and mental agility. "The feeling of perfecting a trick or figuring out a way to kick the ball", they said, is incredibly satisfying.

Soccer isn’t just about running around—it encourages players to think strategically and creatively to find ways to win and defend. The combination of physical activity, mental agility, and creativity is what makes soccer such an exciting and rewarding sport. It helps players develop their fitness while also challenging them to come up with new ideas and solutions on the field.

“I have a hobby of playing video games. They got me through tons of stress, and they help me disconnect from reality when I really need to,” said one teen. “Video games teach me so many things, like how people have different perspectives. It’s useful for learning different techniques in real-life situations.”

Beyond the fun and competition, video games also offer insights into the world and help build community. “Many parents don’t like video games, but they can be helpful and useful to society without even knowing it.
